The Government is taking this situation seriously and will do all it can to protect New Zealanders.
We have a longstanding and comprehensive pandemic plan in place. We are alert and active – but not alarmed.
So far, no cases of this novel coronavirus have been reported in New Zealand.
On Friday The World Health Organisation decided the Wuhan outbreak did NOT require the declaration of a global public health emergency, and as of Friday there had been no person-to-person transmission reported outside of China.
In New Zealand the Health response began on the 6th of January, with advice sent out to DHBs and GPs about the virus and arrangements were made to get English additional Chinese language health information provided at airports, which is now in place.

Despite not having had any cases in New Zealand, the Ministry of Health has an Incident Control Team in place and we are sharing information and working closely with international partners.
The government’s Interagency Pandemic Group met on Friday as a precaution, to ensure New Zealand is prepared.
The Minister of Health has asked Director General of Health to prepare to strengthen border activities in line with any future advice from the World Health Organisation.
Health professionals have been requested to notify the Ministry of Health of any suspected cases of coronavirus, and Cabinet will be asked to make it a notifiable disease at its first meeting of the year.
Today the Ministry of Health has participated in a teleconference with Australian authorities. We have been made aware Australia has confirmed its first case of Novel coronavirus
We are aware the patient, from Wuhan, became unwell and was admitted to hospital on Monday the 20th of January, a day after landing in Melbourne.
Australian authorities are taking swift precautionary measures, despite the person not having symptoms on the flight. Authorities in Australia will be following up with fellow passengers who sat close to the person.
At this point, it’s important to stress the risk to New Zealand from this first case in Australia appears very low as the patient has had very limited contact with anyone in Australia since arrival and followed advice that was given at the border regarding to seeking medical attention if unwell.
